"Firesides shall be parliaments, our cottages be towers." John Clare
The British poet John Clare (1793-1864) is known for his poems describing the life and the natural world in the rural English countryside. His poetry also had much to say about the social issues of his day. Clare longed for a more inclusive, radically different democratic society. He believed that the matters of politics should be decided by the labourer and commoner collectively, rather than by the ruling class alone.
